Universal Credit
HOW TO HELP YOUR TENANTS GET THE MOST OUT OF IT
SEMINAR: 8th March 2016
Venue: Impact Hub Birmingham
The Government claims that, “No one will lose any money on arrival on Universal Credit”. It also intends to cut £12 billion from the welfare bill over the next five years. How can these positions sit side by side? Can they both be true?
This seminar delves into the inner workings of the Universal Credit system and explores the impacts it will have on tenants over the next five years. We will look at questions such as who wins and loses under the new benefit system.
· How does transitional protection save some people from the worst of the cuts and what they have to do to get it?
· How can landlords help their tenants maximise their incomes during the roll out and protect their benefits for the longest possible period?
· How do changes to tax credits and other benefits affect take up of Universal Credit?
We will also look at some lesser known impacts of Universal Credit such as the highly varied impact on people with disabilities and how the conversion from a weekly benefit to a monthly one means every claimant who pays rent loses out.
The session will include:
· The intent and purpose of Universal Credit
· The evolving timetable
· How the latest developments in benefits and tax credits lay the ground for Universal Credit
· How Universal Credit works
· How Universal Credit supports work
· Winners, losers and transitional protection
· Payments of Universal Credit and alternative payment arrangements (including payments to landlords)
· How the change from weekly to monthly benefits affects both individual tenants’ and corporate finances

· whose role involves maximising income for the organisation or individuals
