In this interactive half-day session, participants will learn the 5 principles of dementia, how to support and communicate with those living with dementia and common scenarios in which professionals need to establish capacity. Case studies will be explored and group discussions will be facilitated where participants are encouraged to share their own experiences and learning.

- Recognise and explain the complex and varied ways that dementia may/may not impact on a person’s capacity
- Describe the inter-relationship between varied dementia presentations and each of the 5 principles within the MCA
- Evaluate ways to promote effective communication with adults who are living with dementia
- Evaluate ways to support adults who are living with dementia to be actively involved in decision-making
- Distinguish between evidence of unwise decisions and a lack of capacity to make the decision
- Outline key learning from legal cases to inform application of the MCA in practice with adults living with dementia
- Consider how to apply best practice ideas offered by colleagues.

About the Trainer
The programme will be delivered by Andrew Gambrill. Andrew worked as a Home Help & Residential Care Assistant straight from school, moving to Rugby Older People's Team in 2001. Andrew studied Social Work via a work-based contract and graduated from Coventry University in 2007. Andrew specialises in working with Older People with dementia. He also went on to gain a Post-Graduate Certificate in Practice Education from the University of Warwick. Andrew left front line practice in 2018 to be the ASYE Co-Ordinator for Warwickshire County Council supporting Newly Qualified Social Workers through their first year out of University. Andrew joined the Social Work Team at CLL in 2023. He is a registered social worker with Social Work England.
