Drawing on best practice in corporate governance from housing and elsewhere, we provide up to date advice, guidance and active facilitation to help Boards and Board Members assess their performance, evaluate their skills, review their effectiveness and key relationships, and improve the quality of their leadership.
Our approach to board appraisal draws on the following principles:
- Whole board ‘ownership’ of the outcomes is important for successful implementation and sustained governance improvement.
- Evidence based practice, drawing on research and our wider experience of board development across England and Wales to deliver what works. All our governance consultants have board level experience and relevant qualifications, and keep their own practice up to date
- Individual board members start the process at different points depending on their past experience, and the design of any inputs or interventions needs to accommodate this.
- The real pressures on board members’ time need to be acknowledged and activities designed to add maximum value, as well as providing excellent value for money.
- The process should include consideration of board behaviours, cultures and style as strategic issues i.e. what kind of leadership approach and board culture best achieves the aims of the organisation.
- We integrate diversity and equality into all that we do. We believe that equality and diversity is ‘core business’, providing better services for residents and making the organisation a better place to work.
