Martin has worked with a vast array of staff from a wide range of disciplines for 25 years. He initially worked as a volunteer at a large mental health institution supporting the reintegration of citizens from institutional care before pursuing a career in Social Work. Having qualified in 1999, he worked in a Community Mental Health Team as a Care Co-ordinator and Approved Social Worker (ASW) before working in crisis resolution services undertaking assessments, supporting treatment plans, and providing crisis support for those experiencing severe mental ill-health. Martin supported the transition programme from ASW to Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) and practiced periodically as an AMHP until 2022. For many years Martin worked closely with a large university supporting staff in the preparation, qualification and post qualification required to undertake the AMHP role. Martin remains a registered Social Worker.
Martin was appointed as a specialist mental health trainer and commissioner by a large local authority (2007), the role encompassing areas of mental health and mental capacity. He gained the Professional Graduate Certificate Education (PGCE) in 2009 and has continued to teach courses independently, with citizens who have experience of mental ill-health, and with a range of differing multi-disciplinary professionals. Examples of Martin’s work include mental health law, social supervision, mental health recovery, various mental health conditions, and all areas of mental capacity and deprivation of liberty safeguards. He also delivers a range of Mental Health First Aid adult courses. Martin has led conferences on topics that include parental mental-ill health and the potential influence on children, the impact of suicide, mental health and criminal justice, mental capacity, and the deprivation of liberty safeguards. He has been a guest speaker at a wide variety of events, has experience of learning management systems, has developed e-learning, has authored an article for BAAF, has created teaching resources and has reviewed learning materials prior to publication. Martin has managed budgets and supervised staff; he has coaching experience and has supported a wide range of management and organisational developments in his career. Martin brings an open, supportive, compassionate, detailed, and sometimes humorous approach to his teaching. He is an enthusiastic advocate of the role we can all can play in education and in professional practice. |
