An experienced project manager, educator and policy developer, James has expertise in presenting, planning training sessions and events, framing sometimes complicated ideas in ways suitable for diverse audiences.
Following a degree in Theology and Philosophy and a short spell as a research assistant focusing on economic deprivation, James trained as a teacher. While he enjoyed the challenge of teaching and shaping young minds, he was keen to keep fashioning his own and so returned to university to complete a Masters degree in Philosophy. A dissertation on personalised media content led to a PhD in Law. His thesis addressed the BBC’s deployment of algorithmically driven recommender systems and how public service media organisations might deploy them legally and politically responsibly. Subsequently, James has been involved in work drafting European technical standards following the EU AI Act, ensuring that they supported the intent of the Act, that AI products and services deployed within the EU were human centric and protected citizen’s health, safety and fundamental rights. More recently, he continues to be involved in the drafting of technical standards, specifically concerning the development of AI Ethics Tools for organisations and is developing work based on ethical concerns regarding AI in education, specifically the impact of generative AI. He has written papers and content on a wide range of topics, including the EU AI Act, case studies of AI deployments that pose risks or violations of fundamental rights. |
