Undertaking the formal training to become an Approved Mental Health Professional is a significant investment for both the professional and their organisation/employer.  This 3-day programme is an essential launchpad for: 

• any professional (e.g. Social Worker, Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist) who is seriously considering becoming an AMHP 
• staff who are thinking about AMHP practice as career development

All participants will gain a solid foundation of knowledge, understanding and insight into real‑world AMHP practice.   The learning environment will be supportive and interactive, drawing on the range of professional experience within the group. Day 1: Mental Health Law

• Mental Health Act fundamentals 

• Mental Capacity, Human rights and least restriction 

• Case law and real‑world scenarios 

• Preparing to evidence law in portfolio  

Day 2: Understanding Mental Disorder 

• Bio-psychosocial model (and critique) in presentation 

• How different models shape AMHP assessments 

• Confirming understanding in written evidence

Day 3: AMHP Values & Assessment Skills 

• Inequality and anti-discriminatory practice in AMHP role  

• Considering and evidencing risk in decision making 

• How prepared are you now?

The programme will be delivered online via MS Teams, With two dates currently available for each of the three days
Day 1– 1st October 2026 or 24th November 2026 
Day 2 – 4th November 2026 or 8th January 2027 
Day 3 – 2nd of December 2026 or 5th February 2027 

£275+VAT per delegate for the full 3 day course.
Discounts available for organisations; 5% discount for 2 delegates and 10% for 3+ delegates

The programme is designed and delivered by Martin Gilbert based on over 25 years professional practice, which includes: 

• Managing the Learning & Development of AMHP practice 

• Supporting AMHP qualification/post qualification across the West Midlands 

• Contributing to the delivery of the AMHP programme at the University of Birmingham 

• Mental Health Social Work experience
